Driving Mistakes You Didn’t Know You Were Making

Many of us pride ourselves on our driving skills, but it is surprising how often people are not quite as adept at driving as they think they are. The truth is that even an experienced driver who drives every day will fall into a few similar traps, and this is something that is hard to notice until you are aware of it, and often that means it’s too late. In this post, we are going to take a look at some of the most common driving mistakes which you might well be guilty of making yourself. Understanding these should help you to pay closer attention to your own driving, and so become a safer and more confident driver in future.

Forgetting To Signal

This one is so pervasive exactly because it just relies on you forgetting to do something which should be second nature. We have all been guilty of forgetting to signal once in a while, but if you are doing it frequently it might actually pose a real risk to yourself and other road users. It’s a good idea to take a look at yourself the next time you are driving, and check to see whether you are signalling at all the times when you should be signalling. If you are changing lanes, that is a particularly important one, as that is where many accidents happen. But it is just as important to ensure you let others know where you intend to go at any time it is necessary.

Not Focusing Properly

There is something of a meditative art to finding the right kind of focus when you are driving. If you have been driving for a long time, you might have developed your own kind of focus – looking at a particular part of the road, or zoning into a certain way of thinking – which you find helpful. But it is possible that you are not doing yourself any favors. A lot of people who need to contact firms like Sansone, Sumner & Lauber might accidentally be making a few errors. For example, many people actually look too far ahead on the road than the experts advise. You should be looking a few feet in front of your car most of the time – with the occasional glance further ahead. Similarly, your focus should be a balance between calm and attentive – not always easy to conjure, but worth practising nonetheless.

Driving Inefficiently

Surprisingly few people actually put much effort into trying to drive in as efficient a manner as possible. This is shocking, given that everyone knows how expensive fuel can be, especially if you drive on a regular basis. As it happens, there are probably a number of things you are doing which are causing you to use more fuel than necessary. For example, you might be accelerating too fast, or changing gears at too high a rev. Or you could be accelerating when it is not needed, such as downhill. Similarly, braking too much uses fuel, so it is better to think ahead and maintain a consistent speed.
