Making Our Big World Smaller

In the modern world, it can be very hard to know who you can trust. With so many dangerous people on the news and in the media, and so all of the lies floating around, it can be very hard to get a clear picture. As governments drop formal bonds and start imposing new sanctions and rules on one another, the world is growing apart. This is a shame, as these bonds took decades to develop. Along with this, they also mark a change in the way society works. Our social evolution depends on our willingness to work together as a world. There are several areas where change can be made to achieve this goal, and this post is going to go through some of them.

Big World Smaller

For a long time, business and finance have driven a lot of the world’s decisions. For example, the UK’s decision to leave the EU was largely based on unfair taxation and welfare rules which cost a disproportionate amount of money. Solving issues like this isn’t a simple matter, though. Money will always play a huge role in the relations between countries. Unfortunately, though, this factor will often be a higher priority than the people involved. This will often cause rash decisions which don’t benefit the citizens who have to deal with them, causing social issues on a large scale. Solving this issue is just a matter of switching focus, from profit to people, to allow for social reform.

A lot of people have high hopes for a future where traveling around the world doesn’t require a passport. With countries unified, travel wouldn’t be a concern or risk. This isn’t the story seen today, though. Instead, travel is going to be getting a lot harder over the next few years. With high frequencies of terror attacks over the last few years, a lot of countries are reluctant to let people from so-called risk areas in. A great example of this can be found in the flight ban currently imposed on several Middle-Eastern countries, by the United States. To enable the world to truly work as one, though, travel needs to be something everyone has access to.

Finally, there are some areas of the world which are incredibly hard to work with. Unfortunately, not every government is chosen by the people to lead. Instead, sometimes, people manage to get into power through other means. Of course, there is nothing wrong with a different political structure; it just makes it hard to communicate with them. The National Endowment for Democracy is an organization dedicated to beating this problem. Working with countries with less-developed democracies, or different types of government altogether, the Endowment is responsible for a lot. Compared to modern societies, a lot of these places are seen as behind. But, it doesn’t matter how a place is governed, they can still benefit the world.

Hopefully, this post will give you a good idea of the tricky spot the world is in. Without the input of more than one country, some of the biggest feats we have to aim for will be impossible. Private businesses and nonprofits can’t do all of the work. Instead, governments need to start finding ways to work with each other, not against.
