Nevada is a state famous for two things: the desert, and the city of Las Vegas. As you can imagine, Nevada has over 50 million visitors traveling to it each year. And with three million permanent residents, that means there are plenty of road users.
It comes as no surprise that auto accidents are a problem in the state. In fact, many people die on Nevada’s roads each year because of auto accidents. To combat the problem, Nevada launched the Zero Fatalities traffic safety initiative in 2011. Although it had an impact in some areas, it hasn’t completely eradicated the problem.
What’s worrying is that fatalities on the road are on the rise. The infographic on this page offers a detailed analysis of the problem. But, to summarize, let’s pick out a few key facts.
First of all, there has been a 10% increase in road traffic accident fatalities from 2014-15. In total, there were 321 fatalities in 2015. When you compare that with figures from 2013-14, that equates to almost a 30% increase!
Pedestrian fatalities have seen a sharp rise from 51 to 60 for 2014-15. The figures aren’t good for moped riders and cyclists too. So, what is causing this spike in RTA fatalities? One of the reasons is down to the increased numbers of visitors. Especially to the city of Las Vegas. Check out the infographic below for the full facts:
