Cleaning Chemicals: Are They Bad For Our Health?

We often assume that cleaning chemicals are safe. I mean, they wouldn’t sell them if they were dangerous, right?! That’s not always the case. What if I told you that some cleaning chemicals have the potential to cause serious, life-altering diseases such as cancer? I’m not here to scare you, but it’s important to understand these chemicals and how to use them safely.

Cleaning Chemicals

Our Health

The potential health effects caused by cleaning chemicals depends on what you’re planning to use. The most dangerous examples are normally found in oven cleaners and drain cleaners; highly corrosive stuff. Obviously, swallowing them could be potentially lethal, but even getting it on your skin can cause horrendous burns. Inhaling the fumes can cause lung problems or simply affect diseases such as asthma as well. In addition to short-term effects, some chemicals also cause long-term effects such as cancer as well. Basically, getting involved with cleaning chemicals is a dangerous business.

The Environment

It’s not just our health that is affected by these things. Have you ever thought what happens when you pour these highly toxic chemicals down your drains and toilets? Ideally, they are supposed to be treated and broken down into harmless substances. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen in all cases, and it goes into our streams and rivers, affecting wildlife. While we do our best to ensure this isn’t the case, the sheer amount of toxicity in these chemicals means it’s almost impossible to prevent. As a result, the environment suffers.

What Can We Do About It?

If you need to use chemicals, you must take adequate protection to ensure your health and safety. Places such as Ascott offer personal protective equipment like gloves and goggles. You can also get masks to prevent inhalation of dangerous fumes. Ideally, you want to try and eliminate chemical usage as much as possible. There are loads of alternative methods that you can try as a replacement for toxic substances, like using baking soda. You can find these methods listed all over the internet, so do a quick Google search before resorting to chemicals. Remember; it’s still important to go equipped with protective equipment, even when using less-harmful substances. These methods sometimes take a little longer to implement, but they’ll be much more beneficial to your health.

When buying chemical-based products, ensure you check the label before you start using them. You’ll be able to identify just how hazardous the substances are to your health. Typically, “poison” and “danger” will indicate the most dangerous ones. Also, look at the label for plant-based rather than petroleum-based ingredients. These are renewable resources, helping to protect our environment as well as your health.

By their very nature, cleaning chemicals are toxic and therefore bad for our health. That doesn’t mean you can’t use them, but you need to take the proper precautions before you do. Wherever possible, use natural ingredients as an alternative. In any case, by following the correct procedures, you’ll be able to keep yourself as safe as possible.
