Don’t Put Happiness on Hold

Many of us believe that we will be happy in the future. And to achieve this, we just need to lose 10 pounds. Or, we just need to work a bit harder to get that promotion. For others happiness will come when they meet their Mr or Mrs Right. Stop putting your happiness on hold. What’s wrong with being happy right now? You don’t need to be thinner, more attractive, or part of a couple to go to that party. You can be happy right now.

There’s nothing wrong with having goals and aspirations. Just don’t put your life on hold while you’re trying to achieve them. There will always be another goal and something that’s not quite right in your life. Embrace your imperfections and live for the day.

Get Healthy

Constant tiredness, pain, stress, etc. can make you miserable. Some of these issues require time and complex treatments to resolve them. However, wherever possible, maintain your health. Eat healthy food that you enjoy. Don’t cut out treats completely. Just make sure you limit them. Find an exercise that you enjoy doing and do it regularly. Quit smoking and keep alcohol to a minimum. Being fit and healthy will bring a greater sense of wellbeing.

Be Mindful

Mindfulness is a state of mind. It requires us to be present in the moment. It’s about being grounded and aware of ourselves. It helps us to appreciate the here and now. There are simple changes you make to increase your mindfulness. For example, chewing your food more slowly and enjoying the taste. The next time you leave the house, take in your surroundings. Look at the architecture, nature, and people. Use all of your sense, not just sight.

There are many ways to be mindful every day. Research shows that people who practice this are healthier and happier. They also tend to have improved social relationships.

Being Positive and Optimistic

We can’t control everything around us. No-one can. Things go wrong sometimes. We make mistakes or do the wrong thing. This is part of being human. Similarly, we can’t control what other people do. However, we can try and respond to problems in a positive and optimistic way. We need to recognize that most problems are temporary and will be resolved over time. This can take some practice, but having a positive attitude brings countless benefits to our health and happiness.

Like anything worth having, happiness doesn’t just arrive on our doorstep. It takes work and persistence to find it and hold onto it. But nothing is more worth the effort.
