At least 18 people have been killed after a commuter train ploughed into a minibus at a level crossing in Indonesia’s capital

The bus driver allegedly ignored the warning signals when he crossed the rail tracks in western Jakarta, local police chief Wirdhanto, who uses only one name, said.

Thirteen passengers on the bus were killed instantly, according to police. The rest, including the driver and his assistant, died either at hospital or on the way there.

There were no casualties on the train.

Pictures of the scene showed twisted metal scattered over the tracks.

Transport accidents are common in Jakarta, where roads are heavily congested and buses and trains are often old and badly maintained.

In 2013 seven people were killed and scores more injured when a commuter train collided with a fuel tanker at a level crossing in Jakarta and burst into flames.
