Honda Extends Faulty Airbag Recall By 21m

Car maker Honda has said it is recalling an additional 21 million more vehicles, including some in the UK, to replace potentially deadly airbag inflators.

It adds to the 30 million it has already recalled over the faulty devices, made by Japan’s Takata.

The airbag problems saw Honda plunge to a 93.4bn yen (£600m) net loss for the fourth quarter to the end of March, compared to an 81.9bn yen (£520m) net profit for the same period last year.

Full-year profits were down 32% to 344.5bn yen (£2.2bn) after a 436bn yen (£2.8bn) charge to address inflator problems “mainly in North America and Japan” – compared to 120bn yen (£760m) in the previous year.

Inflators are the devices that fill airbag cushions with gas in the event of a crash. Takata inflators can explode with too much force and injure people.

They are already the subject of a huge recall in the US, which was last week more than doubled by officials to 69 million inflators – covering 17 car makers.

The Takata inflators are thought to be responsible for at least 11 deaths – all but one in Honda vehicles – and more than 100 deaths since 2008.

A Honda spokeswoman said some of the additional recalls were taking place in the UK.

A statement handed to The Social Magazine said it was not yet in a position to give numbers as it was waiting for additional information from Takata that was due on Monday.

It is not the first time there have been Takata airbag recalls in this country with Toyota and Nissan affected last year.
